The following are some of the activities, events, and work being done to fully develop our Regional Cities of Peace. Whether it's the center city or one of the cities and villages around the Greater Dayton Region, each community has a legacy of peacemakers and peacemaking. The Cities of Peace initiative intends to make the citizens of our Region, indeed the citizens of the world, aware of our legacy of peace.
1. Local activities of the "Dayton Cities of Peace" in 2010 will include the following:
- Exhibits on Cities of Peace, emphasizing how cities around the world are encouraging and working for peace in homes, neighborhoods, and communities.
- Co-Sponsor of major International Art Exhbits from Dayton-Based Artenade and local galleries dedicated to peace.
- A “Prosperity Through Peace” Roundtable to brainstorm ways in which the $33 billion Dayton peace economy -- civic, business, arts, service, environmental, wellness, faith-based, safety and security, sports and leisure, and academic communities -- can work together to create more peaceful cities.
- School Programs and Speakers' Bureau to talk with students and adults about building peace in communities, including a school presentation, "Bullying: From the Schoolyard to the Global Stage".
- Creation of a Dayton Region Peace Trail, focusing on gardens, historical locations, and spaces that emphasize the area's legacy of peace and community.
- Endorsement of the Community of Peace Gardens project as an anchor for the Salem Peace Corridor initiative.
- Co-sponsor of the local celebration of U.N. sponsored International Day of Peace.
- A regional network of support for proclaiming Dayton and Regional Cities and Villages as Official Cities of Peace.
- Cities of Peace Awards for regional localities to honor members of their community who work for a more peaceful world.
2. An International “Cities of Peace Association” to facilitate and coordinate the establishment of “Cities of Peace” around the world. Integral to this opportunity is the need for the City and Region to fully embrace its legacy as a City of Peace by resolutions, proclamations, and grassroots work to foster a culture of peace.
Working with international scholars and through the International Network of Museums for Peace, criteria will be established for participation. Dayton will provide a home for the Association and become a peer among peers for the global movement.
3. A Conflict Resolution Center is to be seeded in the Dayton Region to serve the local, national, and eventually the international level.
The legacy of the Dayton Peace Accords has provided the possibility of creating or facilitating a “Hotel Hope” Conflict Resolution and Mediation Center in Dayton. Extensive academic and professional resources are available locally, including the University of Dayton, Wright Patterson Air Force Base, and other mediation organizations and individuals.
