We welcome  the citizens of Guanajuato, Mexico who have established their community as an International City of Peace. Among many who contributed to this establishment are Sergio Eduardo Lira Torres, Coordinator, and Victor Manuel Perez Cienfuegos, Catedrático at Universidad De León Plantel Guanajuato.

Damos la bienvenida a los ciudadanos de Guanajuato, México, que han establecido su comunidad como una Ciudad Internacional de la Paz. Entre los muchos que contribuyeron a este establecimiento están Sergio Eduardo Lira Torres, Coordinador, y Victor Manuel Perez Cienfuegos, Catedrático en la Universidad De León Plantel Guanajuato.

About us?
We are a group of citizens that have decided to form a Civil Association, to participate actively in the solution of the problems that arise in daily life, in the various social areas aimed at promoting a culture of Peace. In short, we are citizens supporting citizens.

¿Quiénes somos?

  • Somos un grupo de ciudadanos que hemos decidido formar una Asociación Civil, para participar activamente en la solución de los problemas que se presentan en la vida cotidiana, en los diversos ámbitos sociales orientados a fomentar una cultura de Paz. En síntesis, somos ciudadanos apoyando a ciudadanos.

• Encourage the community to transform the human being as a socially responsible person who promotes Justice, Peace, in favor of the development of harmonious relations between citizens and the world.

• Invite the whole community to participate in the project of the culture of peace within the community, trusting in the natural capacities of each member.

  • Establecer una llama de paz mundial que sea la inspiración para la paz en nuestra comunidad.
  • Establecer vínculos de trabajo, de colaboración, de coordinación y de respeto, con los diversos actores de la sociedad, nacionales y extranjeros, que promueven acciones en favor de la Paz y de la Justicia Social.
  • Reconocer el valor inherente de cada persona, así como la diversidad dentro de la comunidad.
  • Invitar a toda la comunidad para que participen en el proyecto de la cultura de paz dentro de la comunidad, confiando en las capacidades naturales de cada miembro.

What do we do?

Our group works on projects of social impact, developing activities with young students to give workshops, consultancies, hold meetings, academic interactions of culture of peace; in the academic field we promote research and participation in colloquia and projects; we organize panels and encourage the entrepreneurial spirit and the promotion of cultural activities (Music, theater, poetry, literature); we seek to inspire our young people to focus their ideas on rebuilding the social fabric, supporting the environment, human rights, and the needs of communities.

¿Qué hacemos?

Nuestro grupo trabaja en proyectos de impacto social desarrollando actividades con jóvenes estudiantes para impartir talleres, asesorías, realizar encuentros, interacciones académicas de cultura de paz; en el ámbito académico impulsamos la investigación y la participación en coloquios y proyectos; organizamos paneles y fomentamos el espíritu emprendedor y la promoción de actividades culturales, (Música, teatro, poesía, literatura); buscamos inspirar a nuestros jóvenes a enfocar sus ideas en la reconstrucción del tejido social, el apoyo al medio ambiente, los derechos humanos, y las necesidades de las comunidades.

Ashland, Oregon: International City of Peace, which is a Sister City to Guanajuato. Many thanks to liaisons David Wick and Irene Kai, who have worked tirelessly in their community and around the globe. Irene Kai is the holder of the World Peace Flame, which will be extended to the community of Guanajuato.

 

And it continues happening all over the world! Above is the Mayor of the Capital of Guanajuato, Mexico, Irene Kai, Peace Commissioner of the City of Ashland, Teresa A. Vázquez Clemente, Peace Commissioner of the city of Guanajuato and citizens. The city of Ashland shares the flame of La Paz with the sister city of Guanajuato. With this, the search for world peace continues.

ABOUT GUANAJUATO, MEXICO

  • Guanajuato es una hermosa ciudad minera, Joya de América, que debe su fama y su fortuna al descubrimiento de ricas vetas de oro y plata. En la Época Prehispánica la región estuvo habitada por tribus nómadas denominadas Chichimecas. En 1541 se dieron las primeras incursiones españolas a este territorio y oficialmente fue fundada en 1570. En el año de 1741 Guanajuato recibió el título de Ciudad por el rey Felipe V de España. Durante el régimen del presidente Benito Juárez, Guanajuato fue temporalmente capital de la República. En 1903 el general Porfirio Díaz, entonces presidente de México, inauguró el Teatro Juárez, el Palacio Legislativo, el Monumento a la Paz, el Monumento a Hidalgo y la Presa de la Esperanza. En 1945 el Colegio del Estado se convirtió en la Universidad de Guanajuato. En 1953 se empiezan a representar los Entremeses Cervantinos que dieron origen en 1972, a la creación del máximo evento artístico y cultural de América Latina, el Festival Internacional Cervantino.
  • Guanajuato, histórica y culturalmente, es una de las más importantes ciudades del país, lo que en conjunto con la atmósfera emanada de sus edificaciones de antaño, envuelve a sus visitantes. Sus inigualables estudiantinas llenan de algarabía sus plazas y callejuelas. Su comunicación a base de calles subterráneas y túneles hacen de la capital del Estado un atractivo único en el mundo.
  • Por sus monumentos históricos y minas adyacentes, Guanajuato es declarado por la UNESCO en diciembre de 1988, Ciudad Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad.

History of Guanajuato
Guanajuato is a beautiful mining city, Jewel of America, which owes its fame and fortune to the discovery of rich veins of gold and silver. In the Prehispanic Era the region was inhabited by nomadic tribes called Chichimecas. In 1541 the first Spanish raids to this territory occurred and officially it was founded in 1570. In the year of 1741 Guanajuato received the title of City by King Felipe V of Spain. During the regime of President Benito Juárez, Guanajuato was temporarily the capital of the Republic. In 1903, General Porfirio Diaz, then president of Mexico, inaugurated the Juarez Theater, the Legislative Palace, the Monument to Peace, the Monument to Hidalgo and the Dam of Hope. In 1945 the State College became the University of Guanajuato. In 1953 they began to represent the Cervantine Hors d’oeuvres that gave rise in 1972 to the creation of the maximum artistic and cultural event in Latin America, the International Cervantino Festival.
• Guanajuato, historically and culturally, is one of the most important cities in the country, which together with the atmosphere emanating from its buildings of yesteryear, envelops its visitors. Their incomparable students fill their squares and alleys with excitement. Its communication based on underground streets and tunnels make the capital of the State a unique attraction in the world.
• For its historical monuments and adjacent mines, Guanajuato is declared by UNESCO in December 1988, Cultural Heritage City of Humanity.

Guanajuato (Spanish pronunciation: [gwanaˈxwato]), officially the Free and Sovereign State of Guanajuato (Spanish: Estado Libre y Soberano de Guanajuato), is one of the 31 states which, with Mexico City, are the 32 federal entities of Mexico. It is divided into 46 municipalities and its capital city is Guanajuato. The largest city in the state is León.

Guanajuato is in central Mexico. It is bordered by the states of Jalisco to the west, Zacatecas to the northwest, San Luis Potosí to the north, Querétaro to the east, and Michoacán to the south. It covers an area of 30,608 km2 (11,818 sq mi).

Guanajuato is between the arid north of the country and the lusher south, and it is geographically part of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, the Mexican Plateau. It was initially settled by the Spanish in the 1520s due to mineral deposits found around the now capital city of Guanajuato, but areas such as the Bajío region also became important for agriculture and livestock. Mining and agriculture were the mainstays of the state’s economy, but have since been eclipsed by the secondary sector. Guanajuato has particularly seen growth in the automotive industry.

The state is home to several historically important cities, especially those along the “Bicentennial Route”, which retraces the path of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla’s insurgent army at the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence. This route begins at Dolores Hidalgo, and passes though the Sanctuary of Atotonilco, San Miguel de Allende, Celaya, and the capital of Guanajuato. Other important cities in the state include León, the most populous, and Irapuato.
