Siaya, Kenya: International City of Peace
We welcome Hillary Onyango Were and his colleagues who have established Siaya, Kenya as an International City of Peace. Hillary has a Masters in Divinity and founded the Physical and Psychosocial Development Organization (PHYDO Kenya), a youth led nonprofit, community based organization in 2009, with the mandate of mainstreaming rural community issues and concerns within the paradigms of policy and development framework.
Ugenya Constituency is an electoral constituency in Kenya, established for the 1963 elections. It is one of six constituencies of Siaya County.

My vision is to create a leading organization of excellence that promote peace and conflict resolution, health, education and sustainable livelihoods that eliminate social ills among the rural communities.
MISSION
I am determined to improve the livelihood of the local community through promotion of peace and conflict resolution, education, health and sustainable livelihoods focusing at mitigating social ills and ensuring sustainable peace, food security, improved academic performance and community health standard.
PEACE STATEMENT
The world can never thrive, develop or grow in absence of peace. It’s therefore our responsibility to ensure peaceful environment wherever we are in order to grow and develop. As a people we should talk about peace and empower others about it as well to ensure its existence.
Physical and Psychosocial Development Organization (PHYDO Kenya) is a local youth led Non –Profit, Community Based Organization formed in 2009, registered in Kenya with the sole mandate of mainstreaming rural community issues and concerns within the paradigms of policy and development framework at local and regional level to achieve inclusive self – reliance and sustainable development.
We envision a leading organization of excellence promoting peace and conflict resolution, health, education and sustainable livelihoods that eliminate social ills among the rural communities.
PHYDO Kenya is therefore determined to ensure a peaceful environment and is willing to partner with the like-minded Organizations. We hereby submit our humble application to join International Cities of Peace.

FROM HILLARY ONYANGO WERE: “I AM 38 YEARS OLD SINGLE, A KENYAN, NON POLITICAL AND 10TH BORN IN A FAMILY OF 10 SIBLINGS (5 SISTERS AND 5 BOYS). I AM BORN AND RAISED IN WESTERN KENYA, SIAYA COUNTY IN UGENYA SUB COUNTY.
I AM A GRADUATE WITH MASTERS DEGREE IN DIVINITY FROM ANYANG’ UNIVERSITY IN SOUTH KOREA. I HAVE WORKED WITH BETHEL OUTREACH PROJECT AS PROJECT OFFICER (2007 – 2010), LITTLE SPORTS ORGANIZATION AS PROJECT OFFICER (2011 – 2013), PHYDO Kenya AS DIRECTOR (2013 – TO DATE). I SPEARHEADED A NUMBER OF PEACE MEETINGS AND PROJECTS DURING 2007 KENYAN POST ELECTION VIOLENCE IN KIBERA SLUM. I ALSO INNITIATED PEACE AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION PROJECTS IN NAIROBI SCHOOLS THAT WAS GEARED TOWARDS ERADICATION OF BULLYING AND CORPORAL PUNISHMENT IN GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS. AN ALTERNATIVE RED AND YELLOW CARD INNOVATED TO REPLACE CORPORAL PUNISHMENT AND BULLYING TO ATTAIN A PEACEFUL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT FOR THE CHILDREN IN SCHOOL..”

Siaya town is in Siaya County of Kenya. It is the capital of Siaya County. The urban center had a population of 33,153 in 2019 census. The main economic activities of Siaya County people includes subsistence farming, livestock keeping, fishing, rice farming and small scale trading. The other strengths of Siaya include natural resources like indigenous forests, rivers, agriculture land and fisheries.
Siaya County is one of the counties in the former Nyanza Province in the southwest part of Kenya. It is bordered by Busia County to the north, Kakamega County and Vihiga County’s to the northeast and Kisumu County to the southeast. It shares a water border with Homa Bay County which is located south of Siaya County. The total area of the county is approximately 2,496.1 km2. The county lies between latitude 0° 26’ to 0° 18’ north and longitude 33° 58’ east and 34° 33’ west. Siaya has been split up into six new districts. Under the Constitution 2010, the role of districts are still unclear as much of administrative authority is being transferred to the county. The capital is Siaya, even though the largest town is Bondo.
